Welcome to the August edition of the Take Control newsletter. We cannot believe that it is August already and the London Olympics are almost over. A big congratulations to friends of the practice Anna Meares and Kaarle McCulloch on their wonderful achievements in cycling at the Olympics. Anna won gold in the Women's sprint and Anna and Kaarle won bronze in the team sprint. Let's hope the Aussies can get a few more gold medals!

In other news, Trish will be returning from study leave and is available for appointments from October.

We have developed a very comprehensive assessment to look at all areas of potential injury and can then develop exercises based upon what is required from you at work. Talk to one of the physios if you are interested.
  • Trish has just returned from the UK after doing a lecturing series while the Olympics are on. Well done Trish and Go Australia!

We are currently in the process of trialing the new technology by DorsaVi called ViMove. As bending, twisting and lifting as well as poor sitting and standing postures are some of the most common causes of low back pain using electrodes attached to your back, ViMove technology is able to analyse movement data in real time providing an audible beep or vibration buzz to remind you to avoid/modify these types of movements and/or postures.  For more information please click here http://www.takecontrol.com.au/services/vimove

Our wonderful Women’s Health Physiotherapist Clorinda has gone on maternity leave. Suzie is now available for Women’s Health appointments on Mondays and Wednesday mornings. We wish Clorinda all the best and stay tuned for a picture of the cute bub.

Fast Facts:

Prior to physical activity, static stretching actually increases your chance of a muscle injury.  For best results dynamic stretching should be done during your warm up, and static stretching only performed after the session.

As the brain controls how and when muscles activate, you can actually gain more control and strength just by regularly thinking about activating a certain muscle!!!!!!!!

The estimated cost of lower back pain in Australia is over $9 billion per year.  Over 80% of this comes from indirect sources such as time off work and reduced functional capacity.  Therefore prevention will be more cost effective in the long run.
